A stumble is a semi-opaque layer of light color applied over a dry layer of a darker color, usually opaque. A stumble resembles a
light color veil, partially obscuring the underlying color. When stumbling with the light paint over dark it is a good idea to use a brush that is old and the vigorous motion may cause the hairs to break off. If they do just brush them off the canvas. For a transparent stumble, such as lace curtains blowing in the breeze against a dart background mix colors with an acrylic medium, lots of white and a little water and scrub on using the old brush.
