This is how the painter expresses themselves and their personality. There are many ways to apply paint.
You will develop you own technique and style. Some artists use only large brushes and only paint in a crosshatch pattern some go in the same direction all the time. If you are painting one stroke through the painting, try not to change up the stroke and fragment your work. Van Gogh is a perfect example of a painter who was consistent with his brush stroke, and his painting worked, and is fantastic.
Another approach to painting brush stokes is called stippling. It is sometimes used for foliage and the brush is pushed against the canvas in an upward motion. Stumbling is a method where you can soften or blend with an upper coat of color applied thinly. It can also be used as a dry brush technique, where you do not load the brush with a large amount of paint, just a small amount and go over the canvas with light strokes of the brush. It will make an old fence look old, and old barn, a person’s hair when doing a portrait.
