Charcoal is similar to pastel in one sense and is so different in another depending on what you want to achieve. Since we are working in one color, either conti or charcoal we can smug the piece, use our fingers to smug, line it out and get crazy. Charcoal is a great way to make “thumbnail” sketches for use in the later painting or artwork. Charcoal is fun, it is friendly and messy, which I think is fantastic. You could do a wonderful one-color portrait and be amazed at how many colors you have gotten from one color. From the smug, to the line, to the movement within the surroundings, it is a great way to break away from the norm and very few use this medium, they think color is where it’s at, You could add this to a pastel and use the fixative on it as well. You could apply this to abstract acrylic and put a sealer over it to hold it in place. Charcoal has been underrated lately and should be used more often. The opportunities with charcoal are endless, and it works on any paper you like. You could also apply pencil and charcoal together to become a very interesting and exciting picture. Remember pencils can smug to.
